📖League Overview / History

The Liga NaÈ›ională de Baschet Masculin is Romania’s top professional basketball league, founded in 1950. While Romania is better known for its football and handball traditions, basketball has steadily grown in popularity, and the Liga NaÈ›ională has become one of Eastern Europe’s most competitive emerging leagues.

The league underwent major reforms in the 2010s, when the Romanian Basketball Federation modernized its structure and increased investment in facilities, foreign players, and youth development. The merger of the Liga Națională and the old Division A in 2018 created a single unified top flight, which has since gained stability and improved competitiveness.

Historically, Steaua BucureÈ™ti was the country’s most successful basketball club, dominating in the early decades with over 20 championships. In recent years, however, the balance of power has shifted to clubs like U-BT Cluj-Napoca, CSM Oradea, and CSM CSU PloieÈ™ti. Cluj in particular has become the modern face of Romanian basketball, winning multiple titles and making deep runs in the Basketball Champions League (BCL) and FIBA Europe Cup, bringing international recognition to Romanian hoops.

The league has also played a role in developing Romanian national team talent. Players like Cristian Achim, Vlad Moldoveanu, and Emanuel Cățe have represented the country in international competitions, while imports from the U.S. and Europe have raised the quality of play domestically. Romania hosted EuroBasket 2017 group stages in Cluj-Napoca, which was a milestone moment for the sport in the country.

Fan culture is on the rise, with Cluj-Napoca boasting one of the best atmospheres in the region. The league’s blend of Romanian players, European veterans, and American imports makes it increasingly attractive, especially as Romanian clubs improve their international standing.

The Liga Națională is Tier 2 because while it lacks the financial depth of Tier 1 leagues, its clubs are increasingly competitive in European competitions, especially Cluj-Napoca in the BCL. Strong fan support, improved facilities, and growing budgets have elevated Romania from a Tier 3 league into a respected Tier 2 status in recent years.
