PLK

📖League Overview / History

The Polska Liga Koszykówki (PLK) is Poland’s top professional basketball league, founded in 1928. While it may not have the same international fame as Spain or Turkey, the PLK has been central to the growth of Polish basketball and has developed into a respected competition within Central and Eastern Europe.

The league became fully professional in the 1990s, a period when Polish basketball began to modernize. Historic clubs like Śląsk Wrocław, Anwil Włocławek, Trefl Sopot, and Asseco Prokom Gdynia have defined different eras of the PLK. Among them, Śląsk Wrocław stands out as the most successful domestic club, with over 15 championships, while Anwil and Trefl remain fan favorites with strong traditions.

Perhaps the biggest milestone for Polish basketball came in the 2000s, when Asseco Prokom Gdynia emerged as a continental competitor. Prokom became the first Polish team to reach the EuroLeague Top 8 (in 2010), proving that Polish clubs could compete at the highest European level. Their success gave the PLK global recognition for the first time.

The league is also known for developing Polish talent. Stars such as Marcin Gortat (NBA center with Orlando and Washington), Mateusz Ponitka (EuroLeague forward), and Adam Waczyński all came through the Polish system before moving abroad. The PLK continues to be a platform for young Polish players while also hosting a steady flow of American imports and European veterans.

Fan culture is strong in Poland, with clubs like Anwil WÅ‚ocÅ‚awek known for creating some of the loudest and most passionate basketball atmospheres in Central Europe. Domestic rivalries remain key to the league’s popularity, while international participation has helped Polish basketball gain further respect.

Today, the PLK is classified as a Tier 2 European league. While it lacks the financial power and global pull of Tier 1 leagues, it offers competitive basketball, strong fan bases, and a proven track record of producing international-level players.
